Doral is a medium sized city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The city has approximately ten neighborhoods and is the 63rd largest community in the state. It is located about twelve miles from downtown Miami. The city motto is “Live, Work, Learn and Play” and it has earned the nicknames Little Caracas and Doralzuela. Over 53% of adults in the city hold four-year or high degrees. It is a somewhat ethnically diverse city where approximately 62% of all residents were born outside the United States. Common ancestries among residents include Italian, Brazilian and European. Spanish is the primary language followed by English and Portuguese. It has mayor/council/manager style of city government with a four member council. It has been awarded Playful City USA in 2010-201 and Tree City USA from 2008-213 as well as other awards and rankings.
The original builders of the area were Alfred and Doris Kaskel. The city’s name is derived from a combination of thier names Dor and Al. In the late 1950s the Kaskels purchased a sprawling 2,400 acre parcel of swampland intending to develop/build a golf course and hotel. It wasn’t until 1962 that their dream became a reality and the Doral Country Club opened and soon became an area hot spot. In 1963, the country club hosted the first Doral Open Invitational, which is still Florida’s major PGA event Residential growth took off in the 1980s with the development of Doral Estates and Doral Park. Efforts toward incorporation began in 1995. In 1996 the community elected its first community council and incorporation followed in January of 2002.
The city span 13.6 square miles, 13.2 square miles of land and the remainder water. It is a decidedly white-collar community where over 91% of the workforce hold/work in white-collar positions or professions. It is an upper-middle class community when compared to state and national economic standards. In 2010, the population was $45,704, the population density was 3,293.4 people per square mile and the per capita income was $27,904. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $68,506 and the estimated per capita income was $27,235. In the same year the estimated median house or condo value in the city was $279,652, the mean price on all housing units was $282,366 and the median gross rent was $1,680. In 2014, the population had risen to 54,116 and the population density was 4,111 people per square mile. The city is protected by the Miami-Dade Police Department and the Miami-Dade Fire&Rescue Department whose headquarters are both in Doral.
Public education is provided by the Miami-Dade Public School System. There are a number of schools public, private and charter within the city like Shelton Academy, Doral Senior High School, Divine Savior Academy and others. The city features world-class parks and cultural activities, over half of Miami-Dade County business parks, two branches of the Miami-Dade Public Library, shopping centers, malls and 100 corporations, a plethora of small businesses and a warm and diverse populace.
