Miami Beach is a large coastal, resort city in Miami-Dade County. It has approximately 29 neighborhoods and is the 25th largest community in the state of Florida. The city is nautical in nature with a rich maritime history, countless waterfront activities and gorgeous oceanfront scenery. The city often referred to as “The Beach” and it has a commissioner/manager form of city government with six commissioners. The first structure on the waterfront of the area was the Biscayne House of Refuge, built in 1876. This house was meant as aid and refuge for those people who had been shipwrecked. The city has remained a pre-imminent beach resort area since the early 1900s. The city was incorporated in 1915. The Art Deco Historic District, which is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The city spans 18.7 square miles, seven square miles of land area and 11.7 square miles of water. In 2014, the population was 91,732 and the population density was 13,042 people per square mile. It is a decidedly white-collar city with over 89% of the workforce holding white collar positions. Nearly 8% of the workforce works from home via telecommuting and home based businesses. It is a wealthy community in comparison to state and federal economic statistics.
Public education in Miami Beach is provided by the schools of the Miami-Dade County Public School System. Schools in the city include, but are not limited to Treasure Island Elementary, South Pointe Elementary, Nautilus Middle School and Miami Beach Senior High. Public transportation is provided by Metrobus. Walking and biking are also popular forms of transportation, there is even a bike sharing system.
