Miami Lakes is a medium sized, incorporated town in Miami-Dade County. It is a suburb of Miami, with approximately five neighborhoods and it is the 98th largest community in the state of Florida. The city motto “Growing Beautifully” is a testament to the community pride and the focus of the civic leaders. It has a mayor/council form of city government consisting of a mayor and a six member council. Nearly 32% of adults in Miami Lakes hold four-year degrees or higher. It is a very ethnically diverse community, where nearly half of the residents were born outside of the United States. Spanish is the primary language and English is second most common. Development of the area began in 1962. It was developed and constructed by the Sengra company, which is now known as Graham Companies. It was projected to be a thirty-year project but it is still under development. The original development, which is to the east of the Palmetto Expressway, is a master-planned development by Lester Collins. This area features beautiful curving tree-lined roadways. The development features tot-lot playgrounds, strip malls, a wonderful town center and more. It was the 31st municipality incorporated in the county and was incorporated on December 5th, 2000. Much of the town is still owned by the development company. These areas contain undeveloped land, office buildings, apartments and more.
The town spans 6.4 square miles, six square miles of land area and .4 square miles of water. It has a mixed workforce for both white and blue collar workers and is an upper-middle income community in comparison to state and national economic statistics. The per capita income in 2010 was $28,006. In 2013, the population was 30,571 and the population density was 5,211 people per square mile. In the same year the estimated median household income was $61,998 and the per capita income was $26,643. Further in 2013, the estimated median value for a house or condominium was $278,694, the mean price on all housing units was $282,366 and the median gross rent was $1,394. By 2014, the population had risen to 30,791. Together all these figures reveal strong growth both in population and local economics.
Public education in Miami Lakes is provided by the Miami-Dade County Public School System. Schools in the city include Barbara Goleman Senior High, Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Miami Lakes Middle School and more. Magnet and Private Schools in the town includes Our Lady of the Lakes and Dade Christian. The town is quite unique where as the town only spans about six and a half square miles it features literally 99 park locations. Among these parks large parks, tot-lots, green ways, trails and more. The town has a wonderful and truly unique indoor veteran’s memorial. It is located in the Royal Oaks Park Community Center and features a fifty foot long mural consisting of two digital paintings of war scenes.
