Miami Springs is a small city located in Miami-Dade County. The city has about three neighborhoods and is the 163rd largest city in the state. The city motto says it all “At the Heeart of it All” and it really is at heart of it all located between several sections of unincorporated Miami-Dade County as well as the communities of Hialeah, Miami, Medly and Virgina Gardens. Unlike much of the surrounding area Miami Springs has a mixed workforce of both white and blue collar workers. The level of education in Miami Springs is markedly higher than the national average, nearly 26% of all adult in the city have a four-year or better degree. The city is somewhat ethnically diverse, though the majority of residents come from European descent. Almost 48% of all residents in Miami Springs are foreign born. The most common language in the community is Spanish, the second most common is English.
The city was founded by Glenn Hammond Curtiss and James Bright during the land boom of the 1920s. It along with Coral Gables and a few other communities were among the first planned communities in the state of Florida. When they were planned a particular theme and atmosphere was developed. For Miami Springs the architectural style chosen was Pueblo Revival, in fact the original Hotel Country Club in Miami Springs were patterned after a Pueblo village. The growing community was known as Country Club Estates until a just before it was incorporated in August of 1926. The city was renamed Miami Springs in reference to a freshwater spring located nearby.
The city spans about three square miles of virtually all land area. In 2010, the population was 13,809 and the population density was 4,795 people per square mile. In 2013, the estimated median household income was $52,112 and the per capita income was 27,533. In the same year the estimated median house or condo value was $280,705, the mean housing price on all units was $282,366 and the median gross rent was $966. It is a thriving community that is a bit less touristy than many of Miami-Dade communities. It has good schools, low crime rates and high rates of home-ownership that give the community a wonderful stability.
Public education is provided by the schools of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. There are a number of wonderful schools in the area both public and private as well as charter. Among these schools are All Angels Academy, Blessed Trinity Catholic School, the Glenn Curtiss Elementary AIE Charter AIE Charter AIE Charter School, Miami Springs Middle School, Springiew Elementary School and others. Two historic landmarks in the community are the Curtiss Mansion which belonged to the founder of the community and the Fair Haven Nursing Home, which began its life as the Hotel Country Club.
