Miramar is a large city in Broward County, Florida. It has approximately 16 neighborhoods, is the 14th largest community in the state and is part of the South Florida Metropolitan Area. Bordering municipalities to Miramar are Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, West Park and Miami-Dade County. Over 31% of adults in the city hold four-year degrees or better. It is an extremely ethnically and culturally diverse, nearly 44% of all residents of the city are foreign born. Common ancestries among residents include Jamaican, Haitian and Italian. English is the primary language followed by Spanish and French Creole. The city follows the motto “Beauty and Progress” and it has a commissioner/manager form of city government. The city was founded by A. L. Mailman, who envisioned it as a bedroom community for the surrounding larger communities like Miami. He purchased land from H.D. Perry and built 56 economic homes which sold quickly. A city quickly emerged and in May of 1955 it was officially incorporated. The city’s name is derived from a similar Spanish work meaning “Look at the Sea.” From its humble beginnings that spanned a mere 2.9 miles, Miramar has grown into a beautiful and bustling city of 30 some miles.
The city now spans 31.3 square miles, 29.5 square miles of land area and 1.8 square miles of water. It is a middle-income community when compared to state and national standards. In 2000, median household income was $ 50,289, the median family income was $52,952 and the per capita income was $18,462. By 2010, the population was 122,041, the population density was 4,134.1 people per square mile and the per capita income was $24,895. In 2012, the population was estimated at 128,729. By 2013, the estimated household income was $55,846 and the per capita income was $22,922. In the same year the median house or condo value was $203,500, the mean price on all housing units was $211,663 and the median gross rent was $1,461. The population continued to rise and in 2014 it had reached 134,989. Both the population and local economics are on the rise and today it is a solid middle-income community when compared to state and federal economic averages.
Public education in Miramar is provided by the Broward County Public School District. There are many schools public, private and charter in the city including, but not limited to Whispering Pines School, Somerset Preparatory Charter Middle School, Silver Lakes Elementary, and Somerset Academy Charter High School. The city also features over 40 parks, fields, complexes, community centers and more available for the needs, uses and wishes of residents and visitors.
