Pembroke Pines is a large city in Broward County, Florida. The city has approximately 25 neighborhoods and is the 10th largest community in the state. It is a principal city of the Miami Metropolitan Area and is the second most populous city in the county. The city motto is “Join Us-Progress With Us.” It has a tropical climate with warm dry winters and hot, muggy summers. The city is largely surrounded by the Everglades and Hollywood, with just a few other communities sharing its borders. An average commute for residents of Pembroke Pines is approximately 32 minutes. Approximately 32.5 % of adults in the city hold four-year degrees or higher. It is an extremely ethnically and culturally diverse city where over 35% of all residents are foreign born.  English is the primary language followed by Spanish and French Creole.

The city name can be traced back to Sir Edward Reed, a member of the British Parliment for the county of Pembroke. Reed purchased and farmed lands which had a road running through them which came to be known as Pembroke Road. Between the name of the road and the prevalence of pine trees in the area the community became Pembroke Pines. The town began as agricultural lands and dairy farms. After WWII subdivisions betan to appear the first two were called Pembroke Pines. The community was unofficially incorporated  in March of 1950, then officially incorporated as a village in January of 1960 and then as a city in May of 1961. Hurricane Andrew in 1992 led to rapid growth in the city as thousands of Miami-Dade residents relocated. In recent years, the majority of the city’s growth has been focused in a westerly  direction.

The city spans 34.8 square miles, 33.1 square miles of land area and 1.7 of water. It is decidedly white-collar and nearly 85% of the workforce hole white collar positions. In 2000, the median household income was $52,629, the median family income was $61,480 and the per capita income was $23,483.  In 2010, the population was 154,750, the population density was 4,671.9 people per square mile and the per capita income was $28,498. In 2013, the population was estimated at 162,329, the estimated median household income was $63,357 and the estimated per capita income was $27,378. In the same year, the estimated median house or condo value was $214,400, the mean price on all housing units was $215,241 and the median gross rent was $1,493. The population in 2014 was 164,626 and the population density was 4,980 people per square mile. The rise in population and incomes signals strong sustained growth pattern for the city.

Public education is provided by the schools of the Broward County Public School System. There are a number of schools public, private and otherwise in the city including Broward Charter School of Science and Technology, Chapel Trail Elementary School, Pines Middle School, Atlantic Montessori Charter School and many more. Today it is a thriving city with beautiful homes, friendly residents and lots of Florida sunshine and community pride.
